Like good therapy itself, good clinical supervision is rooted in appropriate, thoughtful, ethical and theoretical considerations. It’s also based on more subjective elements, like trust and a strong therapeutic alliance between supervisor and supervisee.
Here, we explore how to navigate three common roadblocks to good supervision as you move forward on your career journey.
Individual supervision can be expensive. One of the largest drawbacks, especially for new graduates, is the expense. Many new mental health clinicians have to pay an estimated $10,000-$30,000 in fees for supervision. It’s an amount that can be crippling for people who may have student loans or simply aren’t drawing a large salary at this point in their professional careers. The mindset becomes one of “take what you can get,” which isn’t how most people want to approach their career growth.
There are almost always challenges with finding an independent supervisor. Although a number of therapists provide supervision, it can often take some digging and outreach to find out if the supervisor is accepting new supervisees, what they charge and what their specialty is, not to mention trying to work out a regular time to meet between two professionals’ caseloads.
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), 55% of U.S. counties, all rural, have no practicing mental health professionals. Sadly, these are many of the same counties that are consumed by the opioid epidemic, and in desperate need of more providers. With the rise of quality online education, more new therapists are graduating in these rural areas – a wonderful thing for the growth of the profession. But depending on the geographic location, it can be difficult to find a supervisor within reasonable driving distance.
The rise of virtual supervision is so important because it addresses these roadblocks and more. Scheduling, distance, price and even therapeutic and theoretical alliance are all areas that can be more easily accommodated through Motivo’s network of pre-vetted, qualified supervisors.
